Leuven team

Professor Jacques Pirenne obtained an MD and a PhD at Li├Ęge University, Belgium. He was research and transplant fellow at Minnesota University, USA and senior lecturer at Birmingham University, UK. Since 1997 he is professor of surgery and chief of abdominal transplant surgery at Leuven University, Belgium. His research experience focuses on strategies to improve organ preservation and posttransplant organ function. Within COPE, Jacques was the leader of our COMPARE trial.

Professor Ina Jochmans graduated summa cum laude as a Medical Doctor at the KU Leuven and graduated as General Surgeon in February 2013. As a PhD fellow of the Research Foundation-Flanders, she obtained her PhD in 2012. Her main areas of interest are donation after circulatory death, ischaemia-reperfusion injury and preservation strategies. Within COPE, Ina jointly led the COMPARE trial with the Leuven team and supported the liver and POMP trials in Belgium.

Sarah Mertens has a background in biomedical research. She joined the COPE team in September 2013 as clinical trial assistant at the University of Leuven. She helped with regulatory and ethical submissions, data management, and administration in Belgium for the liver, POMP and COMPARE trials.
